10 Things to Love About October, #7

The volunteer fire department has their annual open house in October. That means little kids can climb up in the fire trucks, cute young volunteer firefighters tolerate small children trying on boots and jumping in bouncy houses, and I can indulge my fantasy of driving in the little cab at the back of the long hook and ladder truck a la Kramer in that Seinfeld episode.

Snugs is timid around strangers. Which is good because I don't have to worry about him striking up conversations with random people. But it's also frustrating in situations where it's appropriate for him to go near strangers. Although he loves watering plants in our yard with the hose, he deemed it "scary" to help the cute young firefighter with the hose shoot water at a wood house with painted on flames. Even after daddy agreed to help him. So while daddy gamely held the hose with the cute young firefighter, Snugs hung back. Fed up, I had a little talk with him about taking advantage of opportunities, not being scared to try new things because otherwise he was going to miss out on life, the open house is only once a year and this is your chance kid, blah, blah. He nodded in comprehension. And then he announced that he wasn't scared after all, that he was going to help with the hose. And he did it! And didn't want to relinquish the hose!

Conquering fears, another reason to love October.

if you could work on him asking the cute firefigher for his number I'd think that would me cool too :-)
